In many ways, Shayne Emmons was destined to be in the
heavy construction industry for the long haul.
Emmons is the owner and president of Emshay Enterprises,
which supplies, crushes and delivers top quality aggregate products
to help companies complete their roadwork, industrial, commercial
and residential projects. The company is located near Caronport
and generally works on job sites surrounding Moose Jaw and Regina.
Emmons’ father, Glen, has been hauling gravel since 1970 and op-erates
his own company, Emmons Trucking. Emmons began in the
industry working alongside his father before establishing his crush-ing
business in the early 2000s. He thought it would be a great sum-mer
gig while he was studying at the University of Regina (U of R).
Emmons graduated from the U of R with a degree in petroleum
engineering, but going to work in that field was a plan that never
quite materialized.
“I figured that I would do a bit of crushing work around Caronport,
sell my equipment and go into my field,” Emmons said. “One thing
led to another and the next thing you know we’re buying more con-veyors,
adding a jaw crusher and doing a lot more custom work for
rural municipalities.”
Instead of pursuing a career in petroleum engineering, Emmons
chose to focus on building the company. Emshay now operates 20
gravel pits and has over 150 pieces of equipment. They manage their
busy workload with a field crew of 10 people, several office workers
and a reliable network of trucking companies.
“The reason for the expansion is that we work a lot,” Emmons said
with a laugh. “We work seven days a week and whenever someone’s
called, we’ve basically never said no. If the customer needs the ma-terial,
we load it on a truck and get it to them.”
