Emmons said one factor that helps make the heavy workload eas-ier
is that he’s surrounded by plenty of family members. His sister is
the company’s lead accountant while his cousin is a crusher fore-man.
Emmons also works with his wife and parents.
“It’s a real family affair,” he said.
Over the years, Emshay has tackled some major projects. It
has been involved in the construction of the K+S Potash Canada
Bethune mine, known as the Legacy Project. Ground was broken on
the project in 2012. Emshay supplied, produced and delivered aggre-gate
to help create the construction site and roadways before they
were paved.
K+S began commissioning the mine in the summer of 2016 and
the grand opening was held in May 2017. Emshay continues to pro-vide
base aggregates for ongoing work at the mine.
“We’re getting close to two million tonnes that we’ve delivered to
that mine. It took 200,000 tonnes of material for the construction
camp alone. The rail line was close to 300,000 tonnes, which includ-ed
ballast and sub-ballast,” Emmons said. “For months during the
K+S project, we were hauling five to eight thousand tonnes a day. It
was pretty hectic and there wasn’t a lot of time off. At the same time,
we were also supplying to other customers who would buy any-where
from 5,000 to 40,000 tonnes of aggregate from us.”
One of Emshay’s niches is producing engineered seal coat. It has
manufactured and delivered this aggregate the last three years for
West-Can Seal Coating Inc. Emmons said it’s a difficult aggregate
to make and requires specialty equipment that not every company
has in its fleet.
“The rocks are crushed to 10 millimetres and they’ve got to be
screened and washed carefully,” Emmons said. “We went from doing
several thousand tonnes two years ago to 25,000 tonnes this year.
We actually have both of our crushers making the aggregate right
now at Findlater and Parkbeg.”
During the winter months, Emmons said the company’s focus
shifts to maintenance and vacation time. The company’s employ-ees
usually take a month off around Christmas. They come back in
January and focus on maintenance, making upgrades and repairs.
The company also hauls some aggregate to strategic locations to get
prepared for the summer.
In all of its operations, Emshay is focused on safety. The com-pany
employs a full-time health and safety officer who’s responsi-ble
for on-boarding new employees, analyzing safety statistics and
ensuring compliance with regulations. To simplify record keeping,
Emmons’ sister led the transition of Emshay’s health and safety
