Educating
Saskatchewan
SHANTEL LIPP, PRESIDENT, SHCA
Hundreds of kilometres already have been travelled with a few hundred more
to go.
I have put rubber to our highways in an effort to convey the Saskatchewan
Heavy Construction Association (SHCA)’s message to the ears of many eager and interested
residents, business leaders and city officials in various communities around this province.
Public speaking engagements with rotary clubs, chamber of commerce groups and business
associations in Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Estevan and Humboldt
have educated them on SHCA’s policy paper.
Our collaboration on this paper, which outlines the Provincial Economic Growth Plan and
how future provincial growth requires a continued focus on infrastructure, serves little purpose
if it isn’t shared with the people of Saskatchewan.
It’s important they hear how the right infrastructure will transport our goods to market,
reduce traffic congestion, rebuild and expand utility networks for electricity, oil, gas and water
and support growing urban and rural populations.
I’ve talked about infrastructure – roads, highways and waterways – and why investing in
these projects is important and how it impacts our economy.
Recently, we have seen our provincial government address some of the issues we brought
forward in our policy paper. A $43.6-million investment will ensure that 69 dams and 130 kilometres
of conveyance channels operate reliably and safely through a comprehensive rehabilitation
and maintenance plan.
These operational upgrades haven’t been done for years and they are critical pieces of infrastructure
– it helps fuel our agriculture industry and our mining industry.
The feedback I have received during my tour has been plentiful. People in this province are
engaged and intrigued, filled with questions and comments on how Saskatchewan can invest
in infrastructure for our future.
I will continue touring throughout the province this summer and look forward to sharing
our message and the key issues we arrived upon in our policy paper. It’s important we share
our view with the people of this province.
