CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
I would like to begin by thanking everyone
who came out to support the
SHCA Northern golf tournament.
We had great weather, a sell out crowd,
excellent support from our sponsors and
a lot of opportunity to network with our
provincial representatives. Dakota Dunes
did an excellent job hosting our tournament
once again. We look forward to a repeat
performance at the Royal Regina Golf
and Country Club this September.
The SHCA board met with senior government
officials in June to discuss Best
Value and how we can continue to improve
the procurement process. Representatives
from the Ministry of Highways, Priority
Saskatchewan and the Premier’s office
joined us for this important meeting. We
will be sure to update member of our progress
on this file.
The Association has been in discussions
with many stakeholders over the
past several months on improvements
to construction signage across the province.
There will be several changes coming
soon, including removing the “Workers
Present” tab below the highway workers
(worker with shovel) sign.
ALLAN BARILLA, CHAIRMAN, SHCA
Awareness is key in getting people to understand
that slowing down to 60 km/h for
construction vehicles with flashing amber
lights is the law. We know it is scary and
frustrating for our workers as they stand
on the side of the road facing traffic. We
were pleased to have SHCA partner with
SGI and dedicate July as Work-Zone safety
awareness month.
The president continues to travel the
province promoting “Better Ways to
Build.” If you have a group you think may
be interested in hearing more about the
information in the paper, please contact
the office. We will continue to work with
various groups to lobby government for
much needed infrastructure funding.
We hope everyone has a safe construction
season! Remember the simple things
when you are out on the road – stay hydrated,
use sunscreen and bug spray, always
keep your head up and be sure to
watch your back when dealing with the
travelling public.
Enjoy the summer!
